The Modesto Symphony Orchestra Opens Its 89th Season With Beethoven’s Third Symphony And Dvořák’s Cello Concerto In B Minor

October 2019 -
The Modesto Symphony Orchestra (MSO) led by Music Director David Lockington, will open its 89th Season with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica, and Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor performed by award-winning cellist Gabriel Martins on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2 at a new 7:30pm start time at the Gallo Center for the Arts in Modesto.  The concert opens with the Star-Spangled Banner arranged by the MSO’s chorus director Daniel R. Afonso Jr. This rendition will feature not only the MSO, but also the MSO Chorus, Modesto Symphony Youth Chorus and the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra. The program also includes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances No. 5 & 6 featuring the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra performing side-by-side with the MSO.

This season’s opening weekend will be the start of Music Director David Lockington’s 13th and final season with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra. The MSO is grateful for all Maestro Lockington has done to nurture the Symphony’s artistic quality and looks forward to continuing to build on that reputation for years to come. All concert attendees are encouraged to arrive early for a free Pre-Concert Talk at 6:30pm both Friday and Saturday with Maestro Lockington where he’ll give insight on the evening’s program. After the concert, all in attendance are invited to stay for a reception in the lobby and will have the opportunity to meet the conductor, guest artist and members of the orchestra.

In addition to the concerts, Friday afternoon, the MSO will be hosting a free Open Rehearsal for student groups grades 3 through 12. Open Rehearsals give local students the opportunity to see a professional orchestra as they work together to polish their performance. If you are a music teacher, educator, or youth group leader and would like more information, please call the MSO office at 209.523.4156 or visit modestosymphony.org/open-rehearsals.
