Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra and Modesto Jr. College Planetarium Combine in Music Aligns with the Stars

January 2020 – The Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) and the Modesto Junior College Great Valley Museum and Planetarium combine to present “Music Aligns with the Stars” on Saturday, February 15, 2020 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. This collaborative event will feature several of the MSYO’s chamber ensembles performing during presentations in the William R. Luebke Planetarium and amongst nature scenes in the Great Valley Museum.

“This collaboration between MJC’s William R. Luebke Planetarium and Modesto Symphony Orchestra offers us both the opportunity to reach new audiences and MJC is pleased to work with Modesto Symphony again,” noted Arnold Chavez, Great Valley Museum and Planetarium Director.  The collaboration began in 2018 when Modesto Symphony Orchestra played Holst’s The Planets, with video footage provided by the Planetarium that was shown while the orchestra played.

The MSYO and Great Valley Museum and Planetarium are looking to explore ways to reach a wider range of the community while providing a fun and educational experience for students and adults alike. In an effort to ensure this event is accessible to all, the MSYO and MJC are reaching out to organizations that serve children and also encouraging a “Pay it Forward” feature to allow community members to purchase tickets that support students who might otherwise not be able to attend. All proceeds from this event will go towards both the MSYO and MJC Great Valley Museum to help both organizations further their goals of engaging and enriching our community.

Who:

About the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra

The Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra serves students in Northern San Joaquin Valley between ages 8-19.  These students participate in either the Concert Orchestra (grades 5-9) or the Symphony Orchestra (grades 9-12) and also have the opportunity to perform in one of the following chamber music ensembles: brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, or string ensemble.

As members of the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra, students participate in weekly rehearsals, sectionals, interact with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s guest artists and gain additional skills and knowledge through workshops.  Each season, students perform in three stand-alone concerts, four education concerts, and an annual side-by-side performance with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra.  In addition, students also perform for charitable/community groups, after-school programs, and private events.

Luebke Planetarium: Located on the West Campus of Modesto Junior College, 2201 Blue Gum Avenue, Modesto, has a top-of-the-line Zeiss Skymaster ZKP-4 LED/fiber optic star projector coupled with a Zeiss Velvet Projection System capable of displaying the night sky and full-dome planetarium films for an audience of 100.

About the Great Valley Museum

The Great Valley Museum (GVM) home is the first floor of the Science Community Center on the west campus of Modesto Junior College.  GVM offers group tours for groups of up to 70 individuals.  Docent guided tours cover the natural history and various habitats of the Central Valley of California.  Live animal shows in which we present some of the two dozen live animals are also available for groups.  In the museum is a Discovery Room dedicated to hands-on activities and materials.  This room also houses 2 dozen live animals including snakes, tarantulas, skinks and many others.  The Science on a Sphere, produced by NOAA, has over 400 datasets that are projected onto a 1.5 meter sphere including real-time worldwide events such as earthquakes, hurricanes and other phenomenon.  The Traveling Teacher program offers over 3 dozen programs that come out to local elementary schools to cover topics such as live animals, the various sciences, nature, craft topics and our California Valley history.  Such topics are also offered through on-site classes throughout the year.

The Great Valley Museum financially sustains it-self through admissions, tours, outreach & onsite programs.  Additional funding and support provided by the Yosemite Community College District and the Great Valley Museum Foundation.
